Doctor suggests tabloids publish daily smoking death toll

Wednesday 26th October 2011, posted by forest

While smoking remains legal, the number of smokers is never going to fall significantly, argues public health doctor in a letter to this week's British Medical Journal.

Dr Paul Jepson suggests the tabloid press publish a list of the names of the more than 250 people killed by smoking related disease each day, as part of a "fundamental re-think" on smoking. "Any other drug causing a fraction of the morbidity and mortality of tobacco would have been outlawed long ago," he says.

He explains that in 2010, mephedrone became a class B drug following widespread media coverage and reports of some deaths in the preceding months, although the evidence surrounding the dangers of mephedrone does not exist. This is in stark contrast to tobacco, he argues, which is responsible for around 100,000 deaths each year in the UK. Why should smoking get special treatment?

"People's attitude towards drugs should be evidence based, and not informed by politics or popular opinion. How must smokers feel when they are encouraged to quit their habit by the same government that welcomes tobacco taxes so gladly?"

He concludes: "While smoking remains legal, the number of smokers is never going to fall significantly - no matter how much taxes rise, how plain cigarette packets become, or how many millions of pounds is spent on cessation."

With reference to the last but one sentence - What Actual Evidence? We know of the fabricated 'evidence' paid for by big pharma who are making millions from all taxpayers selling THEIR NRT products to the NHS - the same NRT products that rarely, if ever, really work and other medications that have been reported to have deadly consquences. Where is the totally independent and irrefutable evidence?

Everyone dies of something and there is plenty of evidence that many, many smokers live very long and active lives. That very evidence has even been spoken about by government and medics in terms of people living longer than ever before. These are the people who grew up around smokers and were smokers!

Equally, there are a great number of people who live exemplary lives, do not smoke and have shunned smokey atmospheres, have exercised, eaten a healthy diet, have not drunk to excess, but still get heart disease and lung disease and cancer and die young, in real and relative terms.

The evidence of LIFE, in my view, is far more trustworthy than the sham 'science' paid for by an industry that benefits by millions of pounds through scaremongering.

When ASH themselves admit that getting rid of smoking has never been to do with health of workers it just goes to show where their real agenda lies - front persons for big pharma! Now, of course, since their anti smoking campaigns. lobbying and lies have been so successful, they are 'training' those that are hell bent on doing the same thing to drinkers and the obese. Welcome to the club all those non smokers and antis who supported the smoking ban. Smokers warned you all that you would soon be in the firing line - that is now coming to fruition. Hope you, too, enjoy the denormalisation that us smokers are suffering.

Whilst Dr Jepson is on the subject of publishing the names of people who die from smoking related diseases, perhaps he should look closer to home and urge the government to do the same and concentrate more on the obscene numbers of elderly who die in this country each winter (that is 3 to 4 months) from nothing more than the COLD! I heard the figure for last year on the radio this week which was 27,000!
