Forest to petition government against plain packaging

Monday 30th January 2012, posted by forest

Forest is to launch a campaign that will give opponents of plain packaging of tobacco a chance to have their say.

The group has launched a website, Hands Off Our Packs, that will give consumers an opportunity to petition the government when it begins a public consultation on the issue in the spring.

The petition, says Forest, is in response to Plain Packs Protect, a campaign launched in January by an alliance of tobacco control groups including Smokefree South West, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and the British Heart Foundation.

Simon Clark, director of Forest, said: "Public consultations on tobacco control can be best be described as public sector consultations. Thousands of public sector workers are deployed to persuade MPs that there is overwhelming public support for the latest tobacco control initiative.

"All over the country groups funded by the taxpayer will be gathering signatures or signing their own petitions. We want to give opponents of pointless regulation the voice they are often denied. The Hands Off Our Packs website and petition will give ordinary consumers the chance to have their say."

He added: “Stephen Williams MP, chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health, challenged us to ‘rise to the debate’. We are delighted to accept the challenge and look forward to sharing a platform with Mr Williams and other advocates of plain packaging in the very near future.”

Opponents of plain packaging who have pledged their support for the petition include include Mark Littlewood, director-general of the Institute of Economic Affairs; Claire Fox, director of the Institute of Ideas and Josie Appleton, director of the Manifesto Club which campaigns for “freedom in everyday life”.

The Hands Off Our Packs campaign will be launched next month. It will be run and managed by Forest which is supported by British American Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco Limited and Gallaher Limited (a member of the Japan Tobacco Group of Companies).

Is their any chance that this has something to do with making it easier for the authorities to spot imported tobacco?

Politicians and other morons who support the persecution of the smokers should get their priorities right. How many children suffered from SHS when smoking was the norm up to the 70's. The simple answer is - very few. Now we have these same morons telling us that this is particularly dangerous for children's health and of others.
First we had so-called experts telling us that it was nicotine and tar that caused the problem. Now we are being told its the carcinogens in tobacco smoke that causes the problem. Ms Pell, the supplier of Bovine Excreta for ASH stated in a report of her's in 1998 that tobacco smoke did not contain carcinogens. Why then are these morons NOW making such claims? The simple reasons are money and stupidity.

cergaettis is dangerous, anyone will say that, even smokers. Electronic cergaettis are a more healthy way to smoke and cut down anxiety and anxiety issues. They still emit nicotine,
