Spanish online smoking guide launched by Imperial Tobacco

Tuesday 3rd May 2011, posted by forest

A leading tobacco manufacturer has launched a new smokers’ website which provides consumers with details of bars, cafes and restaurants with smoking areas in Spain.

Aquí Sí (‘Yes here’ in English) is available online and has a smartphone application.

The new website provides users with details of the nearest place with a smoking terrace based on their current location. Premises with dedicated facilities for smokers can be registered with Aquí Sí by either the owners or their clients.

Jaime Gil-Robles, director of Corporate and Legal Affairs Spain, said: “As a leading tobacco company we are eager to defend the rights of our consumers with simple initiatives such as this. We do not want to see smokers marginalised and made to feel they are doing something wrong.”

Type where you're looking for where it says 'Buscar por Ciudad/Locales' and it'll take you there.

I have already tried doing what you said Jon Boy, and I just tried again to be sure, but I am afraid it stays on Madrid all the time. And as for an English version, it doesn't seem to exist!

Dear Peter / Smoking Hot,

Whilst this particular site has been launched primarily as a Spanish site for Spanish adult consumers, other options to develop the site further are currently being explored, including an English language version. A full UK-specific version is also being considered.

I'll certainly keep Simon and others informed of further updates, and if you have any specific questions or queries I'd be happy for Simon to provide you with my email address.

Thanks,

Adam.

Adam@Imperial: Why is the English version only being 'considered'? You must be aware there is a lot of disgruntlement (to put it mildly) with the ban and the apparent lack of interest shown by the Tobacco companies and some in the hospitality industry to their smoking customers and must be aware that any amendments would bring immediate support to both.

Still, better late with consideration than never, I suppose.

Frank: We are working on a number of initiatives this year that seek to address the perception that we aren't doing enough to support our consumers, some of which are close to a state of readiness. Happy for Simon to pass you my email address too as I'd prefer to discuss further offline for obvious reasons.

After holidaying in Majorca in March, a destination my husband has enjoyed for over 30 years and myself for the past 14, we have decided to look elsewhere for a relaxing holiday; somewhere we can relax and smoke openly, indoors or out.

In March the weather mixed and we found we spent half the holiday in our hotel room. We would normally go again in September, but then, due to the heat in the middle of the day we used to enjoy spending a couple of hours in the bar talking to the staff and having a drink or too whilst we smoked. As this is no longer available to us we feel we now have to turn out backs on Spain.

Many Germans we met in March are thinking the same. One even went as far as saying that this holiday was pergatory and how we were lucky to be going home as he still had another 10 days!

Spain will also no longer benefit from us buying our cigarettes from them. We would visit twice a year and buy our total supply for the year for the 2 of us.

I used to love to visit Ireland and went every couple of years. I stopped when the smoking ban came in there. For sun and fun, it appears Greece is the place to go.
The Socialists got trounced in the latest elections, so there's always the thin hope that their successors will be more amenable to the demands of a large segment of the Spanish public, not to mention a large segment of potential tourists.
