Sticking an exhaust pipe in your car is safer than smoking says doctor
Thursday 30th June 2011, posted by forest
Delegates at the British Medical Association's annual conference have called for a ban on smoking in cars.
Members said research has shown that toxicity from smoking in cars is 27 times higher than it is in the home and 20 times higher than in the pub. They also claimed it would improve road safety.
Addressing the conference in Cardiff, Dr Douglas Noble, from the BMA's public health committee, said second-hand smoke continued to have a huge effect on people's lives.
"The data on toxicity is extensive," he said. "But let me give you one headline to remember - it would be safer to have your exhaust pipe on the inside of your car than smoke a cigarette, in terms of fine particulate matter released.
"And evidence suggests rolling down the window doesn't eliminate the problem."
Health campaigners welcomed the backing from the BMA, while smokers' lobby group Forest said there was no justification for a ban.

Following your comment that "it would be safer to have your exhaust pipe on the inside of your car that to smoke a cigarette", I would like to challenge you to the following test:
I shall sit in my vehicle and smoke one of my cigars - which usually lasts for around 40 minutes -whilst you sit in yours, with the engine running and the exhaust routed as your comment.
If you are not willing to undertake this test, kindly publicly withdraw your comment, and desist from your scaremongering.

"Diesel fumes are as bad for your heart as they are for the lungs, new research revealed today.
Scientists in Scotland have found that tiny particles produced when diesel burns are harmful to blood vessels and can increase the chances of blood clots forming in arteries, leading to a heart attack or stroke.
The research by the University of Edinburgh measured the impact of diesel exhaust fumes on healthy volunteers at levels that would be found in heavily polluted cities. "
