Workers banned from using e-cigarettes in the office

Saturday 18th February 2012, posted by forest

One of Scotland's biggest companies has banned employees from “smoking” electronic cigarettes at their desks.

Standard Life, which employs 5,500 people in Edinburgh, says users will have to go outside like regular cigarette smokers.

The decision has attracted a range of opinion. Professor John Britton, chairman of the Royal College of Physicians Tobacco Advisory Group, said that e-cigarettes had the potential to save millions of lives. He said: “The likelihood is that smoking electronic cigarettes is better than smoking tobacco.

“Electronic cigarettes have the potential to save lives. The concept of nicotine replacement is powerful and good.”

Forest said: “It is utterly crazy. A lot of smokers use them to help them to cut down on smoking, or to try to quit.

“If companies don’t want them to go outside for extended periods then allowing them to smoke an electronic cigarette at their desk seems logical.

“It is completely ridiculous to ban them. If it’s because they look from a distance like cigarettes then they are basically treating workers like children.”

Sheila Duffy, chief executive of anti-tobacco charity ASH Scotland said she supported Standard Life’s decision.

She said: “If a company wants to ban e-cigarettes in their offices that could help avoid the impression that smoking is normal or desirable thing.

“Tobacco is not a normal product – it kills half of its consumers if used as intended. E-cigarettes are much less harmful than normal cigarettes, however there is still a lot of research to be done both on their safety and on their effectiveness.”

Sheila Duffy doesn't have all her cups in the cabinet. Tobacco IS A NORMAL PRODUCT otherwise God would not have it growing naturally on this planet. She should start smoking to get her thoughts straight. The CHEMICALS are not a normal product in tobacco. Nicotine does not cause cancer, it's the CHEMICALS. I wish you people in these money hungry organizations would stop WASTING MONEY on B.S. AND EXAGGERATED STATEMENTS THAT CANNOT BE PROVEN!!!!
If people want to use the E-cigarette to cut down or quit smoking WHY is ASH and the other organizations trying to get it banned ???? Because they won't get funded from the pharmaceutical industry because they don't make money from it.(the E-cigarette). I know a quite a few people that quit smoking with the nicotine gum and patches and now they are just as addicted to them as cigarettes. But THAT'S ok.

Thank You.

I started sknimog 20 years ago (roughly). I started thinking about e-cigs about six months ago. I have no desire to quit sknimog, but I was concerned about the health ramifications. E-cigs seem like a way for me to have a habit that I enjoy, but with fewer health concerns. And, this will sound silly, but my cats factored into my decision to switch. I worried about their little lungs. (I know I know not so concerned about my lungs, but OH NO don't mess with the kitty!) I didn't like the way they'd react when they'd get near me with a lit cigarette. They'd wince and dash away from it. They do not react negatively to the e-cig. One nuzzled the LED today seriously. I think they like the light. My starter kit arrived two weeks ago. (I'm new to vaping, but I'm here because I hope to help others.) My transition has been very smooth. I still think about analog cigarettes, but not strongly enough to go out and buy them. There is some element that's missing with e-cigs. I can't quite identify it. I'm not experiencing nicotine withdrawals, but I can tell there's something I was getting before that I'm not getting now. It's very minor and vague.I'm using Blu and I'm very happy with it. It was the correct choice for me, but it may or may not be the correct choice for someone else. My mother has ordered her starter kit and, if the situation allows, I'll report on her progress with the transition from sknimog to vaping as appropriate. +4Was this answer helpful?
