Vaping not a substitute for all prisoners who smoke, says Forest

Wed 29th August, 2018

Plans by the Scottish Prison Service to supply inmates with vaping kits after prisons in Scotland go 'smoke free' later this year have been questioned by Forest.

Director Simon Clark said, “E-cigarettes may satisfy some prisoners but for many inmates smoking is one of the few pleasures they have.

“Banning smoking completely could have serious unintended consequences including more violence and increasing use of illegal drugs.

“The most sensible policy is to offer e-cigarettes to prisoners who want to quit and allow designated smoking areas for those that don’t.”
