SOUNDBITE

FOREST: 'a haven for committed smokers who feel victimised by health fascists.'

Glasgow Evening Times,
16 February 2001

Support FOREST

FOREST is primarily a media and political lobbying group (see About FOREST). Our spokesmen are regularly quoted in the national and local press and have appeared on numerous television and radio programmes including all the major news programmes (see Read All About It). High profile supporters include restaurateur and TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson, artist David Hockney, musician Joe Jackson, playwright Ronald Harwood and inventor Trevor Baylis.

In our combined media and political role, we kick-started the successful campaign against the treatment of ordinary smokers by Customs and Excise that led to an increase in cross-Channel shopping guidelines. In recent years our primary focus has public smoking bans. We defend the interests of adults who choose to smoke (and wish to continue) as well as voicing the concerns of tolerant non-smokers who want a choice of smoking and non-smoking facilities in public places.

We have been invited to submit written and oral evidence to the Health and Safety Commission (1999), House of Commons Health Select Committee (2000), Greater London Authority Investigative Committee on Smoking in Public Places (2001) and the Scottish Parliament Community Care Committee (2002). More recently we have submitted documents to the Scottish Executive, Department of Health and the Department of Transport as well as being invited to give written and oral evidence to a number of local council committees.

Although we receive donations from UK tobacco companies, this source of funds has been declining steadily for many years and we therefore welcome support from smokers and tolerant non-smokers.

You can express your support by:

1. Paying a small annual subscription. By doing so you will become a Friend of FOREST.

2. Making a donation. In addition to becoming a Friend of FOREST, you will receive free copies of all FOREST publications.

To become a member of our Supporters Council we require a donation of at least £1000 per annum. Corporate donations are also very welcome.

Note: FOREST reserves the right to decline donations should we choose to do so.
