Forest Ireland's response to Budget 2022

Tue 12th October, 2021

Responding to a 50c increase in the cost of a pack of 20 cigarettes in Ireland, with pro-rata increases on other tobacco products, John Mallon, spokesman for Forest Ireland, said:

"This is yet another attack on consumers, many of whom are low paid workers, after a stressful 18 months during which many may have lost their jobs or been impoverished in other ways.
"A 50c hike in the cost of cigarettes may not seem much but with annual increases in tobacco duty the price of tobacco has soared to punitive levels, forcing many smokers to buy tobacco on the unregulated black market.

"Smoking is a legitimate habit and the government has no right to raid smokers' wallets every year with no concern for the economic impact it may have on their lives."
